In a shocking incident that unfolded in broad daylight, Mexican TikTok influencer Cesar Gastelum was fatally shot while broadcasting live to his followers in Culiacan, Sinaloa. The tragic event occurred on Wednesday outside a fast-food restaurant, capturing the fatal attack in real-time before the feed was abruptly cut.
The Livestream Attack
Gastelum, a popular content creator with nearly 600,000 followers on TikTok, was known for his comedic sketches and character personas. At the time of the shooting, he was participating in a social media challenge alongside two friends. The group was reportedly dressed as food delivery workers, wearing bright orange jackets and carrying delivery backpacks.
According to local reports and footage reviewed by authorities, the broadcast captured the terrifying moment when two individuals wearing helmets approached the group on a motorcycle. The passenger on the motorcycle drew a firearm and shot Gastelum at point-blank range before the assailants quickly fled the scene.
TikTok rapidly intervened to remove the violent livestream from its platform, though screen recordings and clips of the attack quickly began circulating across other social media networks.
Suspected Cartel Connections
While a definitive motive is still under investigation, the context of the region and Gastelum’s attire have raised suspicions of cartel involvement. Culiacan is currently the epicenter of an escalating and violent turf war between two heavily armed factions of the Sinaloa Cartel: Los Chapitos and Los Mayos.
Gastelum frequently created content surrounding the “bélico” subculture—a trend that glamorizes cartel lifestyles and aesthetics. Notably, on the day of the shooting, reports indicate Gastelum was wearing a white sombrero. In the current conflict in Sinaloa, clothing and accessories are often used as markers of allegiance, and the white sombrero is widely recognized in Culiacan as a symbol affiliated with the Los Mayos faction.
Government Response and Investigation
The brazen public assassination has prompted immediate condemnation from top officials. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the incident, calling it a “deplorable homicide.” She announced that federal and state authorities are launching a thorough investigation to identify the attackers and uncover the precise motive behind the killing.
This incident is part of a disturbing trend of violence targeting social media figures in Mexico. Just a few months prior, in May 2025, beauty influencer Valeria Marquez was murdered under similar circumstances during a TikTok livestream at a salon in Zapopan, Jalisco, highlighting the escalating dangers in the region.
