Men’s interview dressing is simpler than it looks, and that’s the trap. Because the formula is fixed (suit, shirt, tie, shoes), every small thing that’s off gets noticed: a jacket that’s too long, a belt that doesn’t match, scuffed shoes, a shirt collar that collapses under the jacket.
Here is the checklist we’d hand a friend the night before a law firm, bank or in-house interview, with the Amazon US version of every piece.
the suit: buy separates so it actually fits

Most men are a different size in jacket and trouser. Suit separates let you buy each in your size, which is the single biggest reason an inexpensive suit can look tailored. Navy or charcoal. Black is for evenings.

the fit check before you leave

Jacket: the shoulder seam sits on your shoulder, not past it, and you can button it without the fabric pulling into an X. Sleeves: show a quarter to half an inch of shirt cuff. Trousers: a slight break, or none. Tie: dimple under the knot, tip at the belt. If two of those are off, get them altered. A good tailor costs less than the suit and makes more difference.
the legal bit
Religious dress, beards and the interview
Employers can set a dress code, but in the US, Title VII requires them to accommodate religious dress and grooming, such as a turban, kippah or a beard, unless it causes undue hardship. The Supreme Court made this point sharply in EEOC v. Abercrombie & Fitch (2015): an employer cannot refuse to hire someone to avoid accommodating a religious practice, even if the applicant never asked.
In the UK the Equality Act 2010 covers religion and belief in the same way. You never need to remove religious dress for an interview. This is general information, not legal advice.
Navy separates that fit, a white collar that stays up, matched leather, a plain watch, a proper bag. Then forget about what you’re wearing and focus on the questions.
quick answers
Should I wear a tie to a job interview?
For law, finance, consulting and most corporate roles, yes. For tech or creative roles, check the company’s photos on LinkedIn; if nobody wears one, a suit with an open collar is fine.
Navy or charcoal suit for an interview?
Both are right. Navy feels slightly younger and friendlier; charcoal slightly more formal. Avoid black, which reads as evening wear.
