2 mins read

“There is nothing to wear but there is no place to keep what is already there!” Everyone says this when they look at their wardrobe. Let me help you, Capsule wardrobe is a solution for this dilemma. Capsule wardrobe, it’s the term that everyone is talking in fashion world. But what does capsule wardrobe mean?  Capsule is term we use for small or compact things. Capsule wardrobe indicates a small collection of garments that can be interchangeable. One can mix and match, can layer it or accessorize. Capsule wardrobe is made of cloths that go never out of style. It is the way of minimalizing your wardrobe. It’s all about getting rid of the extraneous  room for the things that actually bring you delight and a real value and also a step towards sustainable fashion.

History

Susie Faux, who ran the “Wardrobe” clothing store in London in the 1970s, brought capsule wardrobes. Her theory was that a select few essential pieces never go out of style, and that by keeping these items at the forefront of your wardrobe, you can enhance them with seasonal pieces to keep them appearing fresh and new. Donna Karan further popularized the concept in the middle of the 1980s. The American fashion designer unveiled a “Seven Easy Pieces” line that dramatically included seven interchangeable pieces of workwear. Her models were all dressed in bodysuits and black pantyhose before basic wrap skirts, trousers, and dresses were added to show how attractive and useful a professional woman’s capsule wardrobe might be.

Her idea was great. Women realised, there is no need to buy new designs every season. Few timeless pieces can save your time and money, and not to forget environment! Keeping only a few items in your closet can flatter you and make you happy. It is as easy to hear as it is to do.

How to build a capsule Wardrobe

Capsule wardrobe isn’t something that can be built from a fast fashion. Slow fashion is a fundamental concept to achieve it. Excellent capsule wardrobe takes time and patience. What you love to wear, what makes you flatter is a base line of capsule wardrobe. Colour schemes and complementary base colours are primary part of this. To maximize the number of coordinated outfits you can wear, simply maintain a few “essential” things in your closet as mainstays.

General rules:

  • Choose a Colour scheme
  • Consider your body shape
  • Choose good quality fabric

Imagine, a perfect trouser that you can wear to office or on your vacation brunch, a black bodycon dress for an evening party or you can pair it with white crop shirt and make an outfit for your lunch date. A red solid flare dress for your beach vacation or pairing it with white crop shirt and making it your shopping outfit. Few neutral coloured or stripped tops that can go with every mood of yours and not to forget clothes that compliment your body shape and make you feel confident.

Few essential items that you need to maintain in your capsule wardrobe:

Classic White and Black t shirt

Black trouser

White shirt

Black or Tan tote bag

Black or Beige hills

Remember that there are no set rules in this situation, but this basic list can steer you in the correct way. You select attire that enhances both your appearance and sense of well-being, and each person will experience that differently. Therefore, don’t be scared to modify or expand this basic list.

To complement your outfit, you can add Belt, Handbag, Jewellery to your capsule wardrobe which will play the role of cherry on the cake. More trendier items can enhance the beauty of your wardrobe and then you can recycle or reuse them for betterment of environment.

Benefits of capsule wardrobe:

  • Budget Friendly – Buying new cloths on every season is not affordable every time. Capsule wardrobe can help you with saving your money.
  • Environmental-friendly – Capsule wardrobe requires minimal cloths that means less production of garments which equals to less carbon footprints, less chemical pollution.
  • Time Saving – Lots of cloths can give you a decision fatigue. Owning Capsule wardrobe can give you your OOTD in no time.
