This year because of Pandemic shows and events went digital. NYFW went through some structural changes whereas some high designers like Ralph Lauren, Tom Ford, and Marc Jacobs were found sitting this one out. Due to the pandemic, digital fashion experiences encouraged a trend for some brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Gabriela Hearst, and etc.
Taiwanese-Canadian designer Jason Wu was the first & one of the only designers who took NYFW IRL and presented his collection in a distant runway with face masks and a live stream accompaniment for NYFW Fall/Winter 2021. In his show, baskets of flowers and vegetables were used for the runway and later delivered (donated) to non-profit organizations in New York.
Rebecca Minkoff used Instagram and Tiktok for her socially distanced NYFW shows this year. This designer used palm tree oasis at the top of Spring studios. Her collection was full of sandals, billowy dresses, floral and animal print designs. Even though it was a hard time for the designers they still used their creativity in many of their collections and format of the show.
Next show was hosted by Anna Sui who took inspiration from the television. Chiffon dresses, faux-fur leopard coats, and florals, the vibrant and vintage reminiscent of ‘60s films like “Wonderwall” was presented in the show. It was also inspired by television’s shift from black and white to color, a change, as we enter the end of a tunnel and emerge into a post-pandemic world.
Phillip Lim Fall/Winter 2021 — In his collection, Lim focused on Zoom Life that is comfort and utility. Old-fashioned garments and ‘70s streamlined style came together with A-line skirts and unique sweaters. Liam also posted a video on his Instagram sharing his experience with racism. Some designers brought up the rising hate crime against Asian Americans and raised awareness with their collections in NYFW by bringing up the asian culture.
Private Policy, an inclusive fashion brand by designers Hoaoran Li and Siying Qu, took inspiration from Chinese migrants who moved to California during the gold rush era, the brand collaborated with the Museum of Chinese in America for historical photographs from the time. The collection fully justified the Chinese culture and designs. “Maybe this is the season we can inspire and encourage people to learn about the culture and history,” Qu said, hoping to honor the Chinese workers during this time in history as well as acknowledge and bring awareness to the increasing hate crimes against Asian Americans today.
Ode to Hope, this was the name given to Victor Glemaud‘s Fall/Winter Fashion 2021. Glemaud designed knit wear with a mixture of wool and cotton made up for today’s day and age. The inspiration of this collection was taken itself from New York city from yellow cabs, chain link fences etc.
Proenza Schouler Fall/Winter 2021- on Last day of NYFW there was a bit of talk, as newly signed IMG model and step daughter of Vice President Kamala Harris Ella Emhoff made her surprise runway debut. The collection featured earth tones and the minimalist, structural, yet soft aesthetic that reflects the concept of balance, a key thing we’re all trying to master in the time of COVID.
Gabriela Hearst, took inspiration from Saint Hildegard of Bingen, who was alive during a time when women were excluded from intellectual and creative life. The main base of the collection was Science and Art.
