When Chanel Turned a Data Center Into a Runway

In 2016, when most people still thought of data centers as distant rooms full of servers, cables and blinking lights, Chanel brought one to the Grand Palais in Paris.

For its Spring/Summer 2017 show, Karl Lagerfeld transformed the historic venue into what looked like a giant data center, complete with server racks, cables and rows of blinking lights. Models walked through the installation wearing Chanel’s latest collection while the familiar language of technology became the backdrop to one of fashion’s most traditional spectacles.

At the time, the idea was striking because the two worlds appeared almost completely unrelated. Couture represented craftsmanship, luxury and human creativity. Data centers represented the invisible infrastructure behind the internet. Almost a decade later, that contrast feels much less unusual.

A Data Center on the Runway

The Chanel set was not presented as a technical data center, but as an elaborate interpretation of one. The Grand Palais was filled with the visual vocabulary of internet infrastructure: server racks, cables, perforated flooring and coloured lights. The collection itself continued the technological theme, turning an environment usually hidden from the public into a fashion spectacle.

Lagerfeld’s explanation at the time was remarkably straightforward. Society depended on technology, and he was interested in what that dependence meant for everyday life. He also pointed towards artificial intelligence and robots as the next stage of that relationship. In 2016, that sounded futuristic. In 2026, it sounds almost obvious.

From the Back End of the Internet to the Front Row

What makes the Chanel show particularly interesting today is how much the relationship between fashion and technology has changed since it took place.

Fashion brands now depend on enormous amounts of digital infrastructure. E-commerce, online advertising, social media, customer databases, digital design tools, recommendation systems and generative AI all require computing power somewhere behind the screen.

Even fashion forecasting is becoming increasingly data-driven. Platforms such as Tagwalk use large amounts of runway information to help designers, stylists, buyers and brands understand what is appearing across collections and how trends are developing. The platform has also introduced AI into the process of analysing runway imagery.

The irony is that consumers rarely see any of this infrastructure. We see the campaign, the website, the Instagram post and the runway livestream. The machines making those experiences possible remain largely invisible.

Chanel did the opposite. It took the infrastructure normally hidden behind fashion’s digital presence and made it the centre of the show.

The AI Connection Makes the Show Feel Different Now

Perhaps the most interesting part of revisiting the collection in 2026 is Lagerfeld’s reference to artificial intelligence and robots.

At the time, AI was largely discussed as something that would eventually transform society. Today, it is already being used across fashion, from trend forecasting and inventory management to design, marketing and image generation.

That creates a much more complicated relationship between fashion and the technology supporting it. AI can help brands forecast demand, improve supply chains and reduce certain forms of waste, but the infrastructure powering these systems also consumes substantial amounts of energy and water. Vogue Business reported in 2026 that fashion companies are increasingly using AI for sustainability-related tasks while simultaneously facing difficulty measuring AI’s own environmental footprint.

The data center, then, is no longer just an interesting visual metaphor. It is part of the physical reality behind fashion’s digital transformation.

Fashion’s Invisible Infrastructure

There is something almost fitting about a Chanel runway becoming a data center because both worlds are built around systems that most people never see.

A couture collection may begin with an idea, but it depends on designers, pattern cutters, embroiderers, suppliers, manufacturers, photographers, stylists and countless others before it reaches a customer. The digital side of fashion works in much the same way. Behind a seemingly simple online purchase sits a network of servers, software, databases, logistics systems and energy infrastructure.

And as AI becomes more deeply embedded in fashion, that invisible layer is only becoming larger.

Europe’s current data-center expansion makes this especially relevant. France is positioning itself as a major European hub for data infrastructure, with the country’s data-center capacity expected to grow substantially as demand for AI increases. At the same time, questions around electricity, water, land and environmental impact are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

That brings an unexpected relevance to a runway set in 2016.

Nine Years Later, the Question Has Changed

Chanel’s data-center runway was originally a commentary on how dependent society had become on technology. Almost ten years later, the more interesting question may be how dependent fashion itself has become on it.

In 2016, putting servers and cables inside the Grand Palais made technology visible. In 2026, fashion is surrounded by technology even when we cannot see it.

The irony is that the industry still presents itself through the language of touch, craft and human creativity while increasingly relying on systems that are anything but tangible.

Perhaps that is why the old Chanel show feels unexpectedly current. It did not predict exactly what fashion’s technological future would look like. But it recognised something that has become impossible to ignore: the future of fashion would not only be designed in ateliers and studios. Some of it would be built inside the machines quietly powering the world behind them.
