Most legal dress codes ask for less than a junior lawyer fears: something dark, clean, plain and well fitted. That can be met with a small wardrobe, and $1,000 is enough to build one if you spend it in the right order. This FLJ Picks guide costs two capsule wardrobes for lawyers line by line, one built around a skirt or trouser suit and one around a men’s suit, with every piece chosen from Amazon and every sum shown. Tailoring sits in the budget as a line of its own, not an afterthought. Prices were read on Amazon.com on 7 November 2026. The product links are affiliate links; there is a short note on that at the end.
Short answer: A capsule wardrobe for lawyers can cost about $706 for her build or $582 for his, both inside $1,000. Each buys a dark suit, a second bottom half, shirts or shells, black leather shoes and a care kit, plus a $110 tailoring allowance. Spend first on fit and on the pieces you will wear every week.
Key takeaways
- Her build totals $705.61 and his totals $582.22 at the Amazon prices we read on 7 November 2026, including a $56.62 care kit and $110 for alterations.
- Both leave room under $1,000 for a winter coat or a work bag, which are not in these totals.
- Set aside about $110 for alterations. A trouser hem and sleeve shortening cost $106 on one New York price list, and fit matters more than the label.
- Cost per wear depends more on how often you wear something than on what it cost.
What do legal dress codes actually say?
Fewer rules exist than people assume, and those that do are general. In England and Wales, the Bar Council’s July 2025 guidance describes business attire as smart professional office wear, usually a dark, dark grey or dark blue suit with a tie, or a similarly coloured jacket with a skirt or trousers. It says that is not prescriptive. In the US, the Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Florida has one of the more humane rules we read: Local Rule 5072-1 asks for appropriate business attire “consistent with their financial abilities”. The court is not judging the price tag.
Careers offices are stricter than courts. Berkeley Law’s guidelines call for a matching two-piece suit in a dark, neutral, solid colour, single-breasted, with any skirt or dress at knee length. Client expectations point the same way. A report by The Law Firm Marketing Club, covered by Legal Cheek in April 2026, found that 52% of 642 UK consumers expect lawyers to dress formally. That also means nearly half do not, which fits what offices already show: formality varies by practice and by client.

We have not named any firm’s dress code because we could not confirm one from a firm’s own page. For specifics by setting, FLJ’s guide on what to wear to a law firm interview covers recruitment, and the lawyer starter kit shows how seven practice areas differ.
What goes in a capsule wardrobe for lawyers, and what does it cost?
The two builds below are our own shopping lists, priced on Amazon.com in US dollars. Prices on Amazon move with size, colour and seller, so treat each figure as the price on the listing when we checked, not a quote. UK readers can use the same list as a template; prices and delivery will differ.

| Second bottom | Calvin Klein Lux Suit Skirt, charcoal | $47.40 | Calvin Klein Slim Fit Dress Pants, grey | $39.99 |
| Third look | Calvin Klein Seamed Sheath Dress, black | $99.98 | None; spend it on fit | $0.00 |
| Tops, three | Calvin Klein Pleat Neck Blouse, 3 at $36.22 | $108.66 | Amazon Essentials dress shirt, 3 at $16.20 | $48.60 |
| Tie and belt | None | $0.00 | DiBanGu silk tie $17.09, VATAN belt $9.99 | $27.08 |
| Shoes | Naturalizer Michelle pump, black leather | $114.95 | Florsheim Medfield oxford, black | $99.95 |
| Care kit | Hangers, brush, cedar, polish | $56.62 | Hangers, brush, cedar, polish | $56.62 |
| Tailoring allowance | Hem and sleeves | $110.00 | Hem and sleeves | $110.00 |
| Total | $705.61 | $582.22 |
The sums. Her build: $99.00 + $69.00 + $47.40 + $99.98 + $108.66 + $114.95 + $56.62 + $110.00 = $705.61. His build: $134.99 + $64.99 + $39.99 + $48.60 + $27.08 + $99.95 + $56.62 + $110.00 = $582.22. The care kit is the same in both: $26.24 + $12.39 + $9.99 + $8.00 = $56.62. Her build leaves $294.39 under the $1,000 line and his leaves $417.78.
That headroom is deliberate. The budget leaves out the winter coat, which FLJ covers in its guide to winter coats for lawyers, and a work bag, covered in our bags that pass the courtroom test. It also leaves out barristers’ wigs, gowns and bands. If you are called to the Bar, price those on their own.

Her capsule, piece by piece
Six pieces make at least four outfits before you count the shells: the suit with trousers, the jacket with the skirt, the dress alone and the dress under the jacket. Navy and charcoal sit together without looking like a mismatched suit.
- 01

Calvin Klein
Two Button Lux Blazer, navy
The jacket of the suit. A plain two-button cut in navy works for court, clients and interviews, and over a knit on quieter days. Listed at $99.00 on 7 November 2026.

Calvin Klein

Cut from the same Lux suiting as the blazer, so the two make a matched suit. Listed at $69.00 on 7 November 2026.

- 04

Calvin Klein
Short Sleeved Seamed Sheath Dress, black
The third look for office days, and it takes the navy blazer on top when a client turns up. Listed at $99.98 on 7 November 2026.

The care kit, shared by both
Care is the cheapest line in the budget and the one that decides how long the rest lasts. The Woolmark Company’s care advice is to rest wool garments for 24 hours before wearing them again, and a proper hanger and a brush do most of the remaining work.

How does cost per wear change what you buy?
Cost per wear is the price divided by the number of wears. It is simple, and it changes the order in which you should spend. Take a 46-week working year and three years of use. These are our assumptions, so swap in your own.
- His suit plus tailoring, $309.98, worn twice a week: 276 wears, or about $1.12 a wear.
- Her suit plus tailoring, $278.00, worn twice a week: 276 wears, or about $1.01 a wear.
- Black leather oxfords, $99.95, worn three days a week: 414 wears, or about $0.24 a wear.
- A $200 statement jacket worn 20 times: $10 a wear, roughly nine times either suit.
The maths does not say that expensive is always better. A $600 suit worn the same 276 times costs about $2.17 a wear, so it has to last longer or look better to earn the extra. What the sums show is that an item you rarely wear costs the most, whatever the price tag. Add dry cleaning to any dry-clean-only piece, since that sits outside these numbers. Two bottom halves help here too, because they let the suit rest between wears.
How much should you budget for tailoring?
More than most people expect, and less than a new suit. 123Alterations’ price list, updated on 3 November 2026, gives these New York City prices for the common jobs.
- Trouser hem: $38.
- Shorten jacket sleeves from the cuff: $68.
- Take in or let out a trouser waist: $54.
- Take in a jacket at the sides and back: $88.
- Shorten sleeves from the shoulder: $178.
Our $110 allowance covers a hem and sleeves at $106. Do all four of the usual jobs and the bill reaches $248, which the headroom in both builds can absorb. So buy for the shoulders and alter the rest. The same list prices Long Island and Westchester a little lower, at $34 for a hem and $60 for sleeves, so expect to pay less outside Manhattan. Get a quote before you commit. Berkeley notes that tailors can bring pieces in or shorten them but cannot easily add length or let out seams, so if in doubt buy slightly large. Ordering online makes this more important, not less: check the size chart on each listing and keep the tags on until the fit is right.
What cloth basics should you check before buying?
Read the fibre line on the listing, not the product name. Words like “Lux” or “Premium Stretch” describe a range, not a fibre, so scroll to the material details before you buy. Wool remains the traditional suiting cloth, but a well-fitted polyester or blended suit beats a badly fitted wool one, and blends often cost less to keep clean. A small stretch content is useful on a long day.
Super numbers measure wool fibre fineness, and the US regulates them. The FTC says a “Super 100’s” label needs an average fibre diameter of 18.75 microns or finer, and “Super 150’s” needs 16.25 or finer. Finer is softer, but it is not automatically tougher, so for a suit you wear twice a week we would not pay extra for a higher number. For shoes, leather uppers and a dark, simple shape matter most, which is why both builds use plain black leather.
Where can you save?
Sales come first. Amazon prices on suit separates move often by size and colour, so it is worth watching the exact size you need for a week before you buy. Resale is next, and a good jacket survives well. Check the label and the lining for wear. The UK Intellectual Property Office’s May 2026 guide to spotting fake fashion second-hand, written with Vinted, says to compare prices, check the seller’s history, examine labels in the photos and pay through the platform. FLJ’s guide on spotting counterfeit luxury goes further if a designer label looks too cheap.
Pupils and new barristers in England and Wales have one more option. The Kalisher Trust has run free legal clothing fairs since 2022, passing on suits, shirts and junior gowns donated by the Bench and Bar, Counsel magazine reports. Your own wardrobe is often overlooked too: black trousers or a plain shirt you already own takes that line off the budget. We have left ultra-cheap fast fashion labels out on purpose. If you want general capsule thinking, our guide to a timeless capsule wardrobe covers it, and our picks for women’s and men’s interview outfits name more individual pieces.
Frequently asked questions
What should be in a capsule wardrobe for lawyers?
One dark suit with trousers or a skirt, a second bottom half, three shirts or shells, one pair of closed black leather shoes, a belt and a tie if you wear one, plus hangers, a clothes brush and shoe polish. A plain dress adds a third look for office days.
Can you really build a lawyer’s wardrobe for under $1,000?
Yes. Our two Amazon builds came to $705.61 and $582.22 at the prices we read on 7 November 2026, each including a $110 tailoring allowance and a $56.62 care kit. Prices change by size and colour, so check the listing first.
How many suits does a new lawyer need?
One is enough to start, with a second bottom half to spread the wear. Woolmark advises resting wool for 24 hours between wears, so add a second suit once you are in court or client meetings most days and can afford it.
Should a lawyer buy navy, charcoal or black first?
Navy or charcoal. The Bar Council describes dark, dark grey or dark blue as usual business attire, and Berkeley lists navy, black and charcoal. Navy and charcoal both work with light shirts and are easier to wear on ordinary office days than black.
How much does it cost to tailor a suit?
On one New York City price list, a trouser hem is $38 and shortening sleeves from the cuff is $68. Taking in a jacket costs $88, and reworking sleeves from the shoulder costs $178. The same firm charges less on Long Island, so get a local quote first.
Does this budget work for barristers?
For business attire, yes. Tribunals, magistrates’ courts and the Commercial Court generally use business attire, according to the Bar Council. Wigs, gowns, wing collars and bands are extra and are not in our figures, so price those separately before your call.
